π Hajj & Umrah Guide for Pakistanis β Step-by-Step Rituals, Documents & Costs
A clear, step-by-step guide for Pakistani pilgrims β the rites in order, documents, scheme, health and costs.
βΉοΈ NayaPakistan is an independent news site. This is an educational guide β for official rules, quotas and dates always follow the Ministry of Religious Affairs (hajj.gov.pk) and the Saudi Nusuk platform. Consult a knowledgeable scholar for detailed fiqh rulings.
π Hajj vs Umrah β the difference
π Umrah (the lesser pilgrimage)
Can be performed at any time of the year. It is Sunnah (highly recommended), takes a few hours, and has four simple rites: Ihram, Tawaf, Sa'i and Halq/Taqsir (cutting hair).
π Hajj (the greater pilgrimage)
Obligatory once in a lifetime for every able Muslim (fifth pillar of Islam). Performed only on the 8thβ13th of Dhul-Hijjah, it adds Arafah, Muzdalifah, Mina and the stoning of the Jamarat.
π How to perform Umrah β step by step
- Enter Ihram at the Miqat: bathe, wear the two white unstitched sheets (men) or modest dress (women), and make the intention (niyyah) for Umrah.
- Recite the Talbiyah: "Labbayk Allahumma Labbaykβ¦" frequently on the way to Makkah.
- On reaching the Masjid al-Haram, perform Tawaf: seven circuits around the Kaaba, starting and ending at the Black Stone (Hajar al-Aswad).
- Pray two rakat behind Maqam Ibrahim (or anywhere in the mosque), then drink Zamzam water.
- Perform Sa'i: walk seven times between the hills of Safa and Marwah.
- Halq or Taqsir: men shave the head or trim the hair, women cut a fingertip length. Umrah is now complete and Ihram is lifted.
π How to perform Hajj β the five days
- 8th Dhul-Hijjah (Yawm at-Tarwiyah): enter Ihram for Hajj, travel to Mina, and pray Zuhr, Asr, Maghrib, Isha and Fajr there.
- 9th Dhul-Hijjah (Day of Arafah): proceed to Arafah β the essence of Hajj. Stand, make du'a and seek forgiveness until sunset, then move to Muzdalifah, pray Maghrib & Isha together and gather pebbles.
- 10th Dhul-Hijjah (Eid / Yawm an-Nahr): at Mina, stone the big Jamarah (Jamarat al-Aqabah), offer the sacrifice (Qurbani), shave/trim the hair, then go to Makkah for Tawaf al-Ifadah and Sa'i.
- 11th & 12th Dhul-Hijjah (Ayyam at-Tashriq): stay at Mina and stone all three Jamarat each afternoon.
- 13th Dhul-Hijjah: stone the Jamarat again if you stayed, then before leaving Makkah perform the farewell Tawaf al-Wada.
π Ihram β rules & prohibitions
While in the state of Ihram, the following are not allowed:
- Cutting hair or nails
- Using perfume or scented products
- Men: stitched clothing / covering the head
- Women: covering the face with a fixed veil

- Hunting or harming animals
- Arguing, fighting or foul speech
- Cutting plants of the Haram

ποΈ Government vs Private Hajj scheme
Each year the Ministry of Religious Affairs announces the Hajj Policy with the quota, dues and application dates. There are two routes:
- Government scheme: apply through a designated bank or the Pak Hajj app; if applications exceed the quota, a computerised balloting selects pilgrims.
- Private scheme (HGOs): book through a government-approved Hajj Group Organiser β verify their licence on the ministry list before paying.
β οΈ Beware of fraud: never pay cash to an unverified "agent". Confirm every Hajj/Umrah operator on the official Ministry of Religious Affairs list first.

β Frequently Asked Questions
Can a woman perform Hajj or Umrah without a Mahram?
Saudi rules have at times allowed women to travel in an organised group without a Mahram, while many scholars still require one. Follow the current official rule and consult a scholar for your situation.
How much does Umrah cost from Pakistan?
Umrah packages vary with the season (Ramadan is the most expensive), hotel distance from the Haram, and flight fares. Compare several government-approved operators and confirm exactly what the package includes.
What is the Nusuk app?
Nusuk is the official Saudi platform for booking Umrah permits, prayer slots at the Rawdah, and some Hajj services. Many Umrah visas for Pakistanis are now processed through it or through approved agents linked to it.
