The Punjab Food Authority (PFA) has launched a massive PFA crackdown against food adulteration in Jhelum, successfully seizing and destroying thousands of litres of counterfeit beverages and a significant quantity of contaminated salt.

During the latest operation conducted by the PFA’s Rawalpindi Division, teams confiscated 2,300 litres of fake carbonated soft drinks and more than 10 maunds of adulterated salt. The products were found being prepared in unhygienic conditions, posing a direct threat to public health. All seized items were destroyed on-site to prevent them from reaching local markets.

Understanding the PFA crackdown against food adulteration

The PFA has intensified its monitoring of production units across the province, specifically targeting areas where unlicensed manufacturing of beverages and food staples occurs. Adulterated salt, often mixed with harmful chemical agents or industrial-grade additives, remains a major concern for authorities. Similarly, counterfeit soft drinks are frequently produced using substandard water, artificial sweeteners, and prohibited food colors that can cause serious gastrointestinal issues and long-term health complications for consumers.

What you should look for as a consumer

When purchasing packaged items in Jhelum or across Punjab, you should always check for the following to ensure you are not buying counterfeit goods:

  • The PFA registration or license number on the label.
  • Clear manufacturing and expiry dates; avoid any product where the ink looks smudged or printed over.
  • The seal of the bottle or packet; if it appears loose or tampered with, do not consume it.
  • The consistency of the product; for example, salt should not have a greyish tint or hard, unnatural clumps.

Following this operation, the PFA has announced that it will continue its surveillance of small-scale manufacturing units in the Jhelum district.
